In a unique project, three local schools have joined forces to host their very own poet in residence. Riverside, Stubbings and Central Street are currently enjoying regular weekly workshops from award winning poet Peter Sansom, around the theme of bicycles and international poetry, to be followed by art workshops with local artist Jude Wadley. The children at the schools are working towards creating their very own audio bike that will be on display through Hebden Bridge Arts festival. Ingeniously constructed by ATC, the bike will use audience pedal power to play back the children reading their poems. Artwork and the poems will be included in the Totally Biku book, and there is a schools website full of poetry, drawing and blogs from the young poets. There will also be a performance of some of the poetry at the Little Theatre on Saturday 5thJuly 5.30pm – 6.30pm, during the Festival.
Totally Biku is funded by Arts Council, CalRec, the Bearder Trust, Rotary Club and the PTAs and Friends of the three schools.
The Biku is Hebden’s very own version of the Japanese short form Haiku tradition. If you would like to join in, Peter Sansom will be running a free open poetry workshop for all ages and abilities on Saturday 14th June, 10.30am – 12pm at Riverside Junior school and then Saturday 5th July 4pm – 5pm at Hebden Bridge Little Theatre. Families welcome.
