British Schools Orienteering Championships

Five Y6 girls represented Riverside at Temple Newsome, Leeds, on a sunny Sunday in November. They’d been training for 9 weeks along with the rest of Y5/6 in Calder Holmes park, as part of ‘Orienteering in the Curriculum’. The girls had learnt to navigate round a course using map symbols, control descriptions and compasses.

Mrs Scarf, the PE coordinator/Y6 teacher and keen orienteer, took Sadie, Emily, Mishka, Rowan and Molly to represent Riverside.

Against a strong field of 30 girls, Rowan was 13th and Emily 17th.
Sadie and Molly both had much quicker runs, but both unfortunately ran past one of their 12 controls without punching. Had either of them of punched correctly, they would have not only got a top 10 finish, but Riverside would have got a Silver or Bronze medal in the Team prizes. Mishka made light of her early mistake to finish the course honorably.
