Welcome from the Chair of Governors

johnI would like to welcome you, on behalf of all Riverside Governors, to this website. I hope it will give you a flavour of what a special place the school is.

I spend much of my time working in schools across the region. All of them contain wonderful children and committed and hard working staff. But not all of them are special in the way that Riverside is and there are two key ingredients that lead to me making that observation.

Firstly, the school’s vision and values make it special. I believe there is a strong shared understanding among staff, parents and the wider community that we should and will strive in equal measure to ensure all pupils are successful academically and to help them develop qualities of active citizenship, collaborative attitudes, tolerance and creativity – characteristics that are no less important for not easily being measured by government tests!

Secondly, Riverside is special because it reflects the community it serves. Hebden Bridge is a unique town and its creative, eclectic, diverse and tolerant characteristics all play a part in shaping the ‘personality’ of the school.

One of the most pleasing things about having been a governor at Riverside for several years now is that it means I have had the opportunity to see the school go through a process of continuous improvement. We are proud that our pupils’ attainment levels are among the very best in the area and that the energy, to keep on improving in every way, remains high under Mrs Burton’s capable and assured leadership.
