Spanish at Riverside
Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. It should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world and has fewer challenges in pronunciation and grammar than other languages.

Children should listen attentively to spoken languages and show understanding through response.
Children should gain a secure knowledge of high-frequency words and vocabulary.
Children should gain a basic understanding of grammatical concepts appropriate to Spanish language.
Children should gain a phonological awareness of the Spanish language developing confidence and competence in pronunciation.
Children should be exposed to cultural ideas and gain knowledge and understanding of Spanish speaking countries all over the world.
